We saw bald eagles!!!! It was the coolest thing ever! There is an actual EAGLE'S nest nearby, on highway 105, heading out of town. We read about it in the paper, and I asked Dan if we could go see it soon. Well, after we went to Pleasure Island and McFadden Beach, he started driving out towards the site where the nest was spotted. It turns out, an eagle "family" has had their nest there for about five years! They have been spotted in the area by forestry workers for over ten years now. It was a well-kept secret for all that time. But because of the hurricane, most of the trees that originally blocked the nest from view have been knocked down. So, there it sits, in plain view, a FIVE FOOT deep, FIVE FEET wide eagle's nest. The paper said it estimates the nest weighs about 2000 lbs and some of the branches are a good 5-6inches thick. It is amazing!! We pulled over with all the other onlookers on the side of the road to go watch. We didn't have binoculars, but some people let us borrow theirs. There was a truck of "Eagle Watchers" that had apparently been there every single day for quite a while. More faithful than NASCAR fans, hehe. We could see the mother eagle on the edge of the nest as she was giving the "babies" food. These babies already have a 4 FOOT wing span!!! And then.....the most amazing thing I have ever seen happened! The mother lifted her white head, spread out her 6 foot wing span and flew off to a nearby tree! It was so beautiful! We watched as she waited on the tree for quite a while. It was so neat! To see them in the wild, in their actual habitat, was incredible! I feel like the Crocodile Hunter, "Crikey!!! She's a beaut mate!!!"
